I'm Lucia, a young designer based in Madrid, Spain.
I mostly work as graphic designer / art director and layout artist, but also as editorial and production assistant.
I studied Design at Politecnico di Milano and I got my University Degree in December 2003.
My first job was in a little publishing house in Milan, where I started as layout artist.
Every month, after filling up the entire magazine layout, I had to go to the prepress workshop to supervise the final art PDFs and to the printer to check the printed products before distribution. Step by step I acquired the know-how and I became an Art Director. I had the opportunity to design a new magazine, and a collection of non-fiction books. At the same time I dealt with the freelance contributors and supervised the work of a new graphic designer who had been hired to help.
After a couple of years I moved to Spain, Barcelona in fact. There, I worked in a little family-run business focused on corporate image and communication below the line for other local Catalan companies. It was interesting, because I learnt how different the Spanish perception of design is compared with the Italian one.
To me, it looked like Spanish people are scared of it. Minimalism meant excessive expense to them and it was almost impossible to produce something sober. The famous Horror Vacui.
After one and a half year I decided to take a break and I moved and lived in Norway for three months. While there, I was working the Wine Magazine I had previously designed, collaborating once again with my former Milanese boss.
It was the best experience of my life. But, as always happens, beautiful things come to an end. So After 3 months in the cool and green Trondheim I finally moved to Madrid with the idea of working with and for children in some way.
And here I am!
3 years ago I started a freelance collaboration with a little publishing house based in Madrid.
From the beginning I was introduced into all the different areas of the business, beyond working as layout artist.
Last year was a great one, because I had the opportunity of design several new book collections.
We worked very hard, but it was worth it.
I always feel great satisfaction when I can think about a new book.
I'm fascinated by paper and page composition. And at the same time I can read novels and articles, or look at pictures. Actually, I love this job because it gives to you the opportunity to learn more every day.
At the same time I've been working as an English teacher for young and very young kids in order to get to know my target.
I can say that it's an awesome adventure, because I would never thought that another job could have been so creative, fun and challenging.
